Homemakers

Women who have contracted AIDS in Nigeria are often put out of their homes with no means to support themselves or their children. Homemakers is an organization that gives $70 U.S. “seed money” to a woman to start her own business. Once she is successful, she repays the micro loan and another woman in need is loaned the money.

To our “Nigerian Diva Sisters” who although we share different cultures, in our hearts we are united. Most of you live in villages where American comforts do not exist, yet it is amazing how you emerge in such beautiful, brightly colored garments and with such beaming smiles! To Kate, who raises chickens and sells eggs; to Ester who cooks bean-cakes on the side of the road every afternoon to sell to the “rush hour crowd”’ and to Mercy who works magic with her treadle sewing machine.

Your children are fed and educated because of your hard work. You have proven to not only be successful, but your sincere gratitude is evident in the prompt repayment of your loans, allowing the next one in need to also “rise above’ and become a confident, self-supporting Nigerian Diva Sister!
